90-Day Transport Project Reaps $56m In Benefits As Work Starts On Eudunda Bypass::

Works will start this week on a heavy vehicle bypass at Eudunda - one of the reforms from a 90-day transport project which has already saved the agricultural industry more than $50 million in transport costs.

The bypass will link the Worlds End and Thiele highways, filling a missing link in the State's 26-metre B-double network.

It will also upgrade access to the Viterra silo and bunker sites.

The works will include:

  • a new road link extending Three Chain Road to the Thiele Highway
  • a new junction at the Thiele Highway
  • a modified junction at Thiele Highway, South Terrace, Viterra silo access
  • minor junction improvements along the route to the Viterra bunker site.

The works were identified in the Change@SA 90-day project to improve road transport for the agriculture industry.

Primary producers and transport operators are already estimated to have benefitted by at least $56 million from the reforms.

The 90-day project was a collaboration between Primary Industries and Regions SA, the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure and Primary Producers SA.


The 90-day project identified a package of reforms and resulted in the A Modern Transport System for Agriculture: A New Partnership Approach report (PDF 6.1 MB).

The Eudunda bypass project is funded through the Last Mile Freight Access Program announced in the 2015 Mid-Year Budget Review.

The Regional Council of Goyder will undertake the construction works, which are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

Increasing B-double access and reducing the need for heavy vehicles to travel through Eudunda will significantly improve the efficiency of freight movements, especially for grain.

This project will also help to improve safety on the roads in and around the Mid North town.

Already the Last Mile Freight Access Program has delivered upgraded access to Jamestown saleyards for B-double and road trains, as well as road train access to the Viterra bunker at Roseworthy.

This is in addition to other reforms from the 90-day project - such as quad road train access between Port Augusta and the Northern Territory - which are creating significant productivity benefits.

The success of the 90-day project comes from the Government working with primary producers and regional industries to make transport changes which have real productivity benefits.

With more than $50 million of benefits realised so far, these often small changes can have a big impact on productivity, which benefits our regions and the economy more broadly.

The Eudunda heavy vehicle bypass will not only reduce the distance and time spent on the road transporting products and livestock but it should also remove many of these larger vehicles from the township.

Last mile access issues generally occur where major highways and arterial roads meet council roads, which can be restricted for heavy vehicles limiting productivity.

Projects such as the Eudunda heavy vehicle bypass can remove these last mile restrictions and help to improve the efficiency of transport for primary producers and freight operators.

These latest initiatives are expected to provide significant improvements, while also building on the benefits that have already been delivered from this transport project, estimated to be at least $56 million.

The new bypass to be built at Eudunda allows for more efficient grain movements into and out of Eudunda and Robertstown, reducing grain supply chain costs with benefits for growers.

The bypass allows higher productivity vehicles to access Eudunda and Robertstown, making it easier and less expensive for both export and domestic customers to move grain all year round.

Viterra has already reflected the expected benefits in this year's Export Select freight rates, where Eudunda and Robertstown rates have been reduced by $2.50 and $3.50 respectively year on year.

These types of ongoing efficiency gains allow Viterra to connect growers with customers in a more cost effective manner.
